Our Story

We’re creating the support we couldn’t find.

Disabled Voices UK began with a simple, yet powerful belief:

Every disabled voice matters.

For many disabled people, the hardest part of disability isn’t always the condition itself. It’s the isolation. The feeling of being misunderstood. The experience of having your reality questioned, minimised, or overlooked.

Too often, disabled people find themselves navigating some of life’s most difficult moments without the support, understanding, or connection they need.

Responding to an unmet need: Aniqa’s story

Disabled Voices CIC was founded by Aniqa Ahmed, a therapist with over a decade of experience and lived experience of disability.

When Aniqa became disabled, she found herself standing on both sides of the conversation: supporting others professionally as a therapist while learning to navigate her own disabled identity.

Along the way, she encountered something that many disabled people know intimately: the grief of losing parts of your old life, the challenge of adapting your life around your symptoms, and the profound loneliness that can arise when faced with ableism.

As a therapist, she recognised a gap. As a disabled person, she felt it.

People weren’t asking for miracles. They weren’t always looking for solutions.

They were looking for understanding. They were looking for a connection. They were looking for someone who would listen and believe them.

Listening to a Community: Why Disabled Voices exists

As she developed conversations with disabled people across the UK, so did a shared story.

People spoke about feeling isolated.
About being excluded.

About being subject to abuse.
About struggling to access support.
About carrying the emotional weight of disability in silence.

Again and again, one message emerged:

“I just wanted someone to understand.”

Those words became the foundation of Disabled Voices CIC.

Building Something Different: The gap in support

Disabled Voices CIC was created to offer something simple, yet deeply needed:

A place where disabled people can talk openly, be listened to with compassion, and feel less alone.

Through emotional support, peer connection, community, and education, we are creating spaces where disabled people feel heard, valued, and understood.

Our work is shaped by lived experience, guided by empathy, and rooted in the belief that meaningful change begins when people feel seen.

Looking Ahead: Our vision for the future

This is about building a future where disabled people have access to support that understands disability, where communities are connected rather than isolated, and where disabled voices are not only heard, but valued.

Every conversation matters.

Every story matters.

Every voice matters.

And together, we are creating a world where disabled people no longer have to navigate life’s challenges alone.

Disabled Voices wasn’t created because another organisation was needed. It was created because disabled people deserve somewhere they truly belong.
